Health Insurance Marketplace Number: How to Call and Enroll

The health insurance marketplace number for most states is 1-800-318-2596 (TTY: 1-855-889-4325). That is the HealthCare.gov call center, and it answers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, except holidays. If your state runs its own exchange, such as New York, California or Colorado, call that exchange instead. The table below shows which number goes with which state.

Searching for this number is messier than it should be. You get federal numbers, state numbers and lines meant for insurance agents, all mixed together. Call the wrong one and you wait on hold only to be told to call someone else. HealthCare.gov also does not accept questions or documents by email, so the phone is often the fastest way to fix a stalled application.

This guide walks you through the call in four steps: gather your details, pick a good time, say exactly what you need, and follow up afterward. At Golden Health and Life Agency, we help people work through ACA Marketplace options, so the steps below walk you through the call from start to finish.

Which health insurance marketplace number to call

The right number depends on where you live. States on the federal platform use HealthCare.gov, and the rest use their own exchange.

The HealthCare.gov number and hours

Call 1-800-318-2596 if your state uses HealthCare.gov. The TTY line for people who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech disabled is 1-855-889-4325. This is the ACA marketplace customer service number the IRS lists for every state that does not run its own exchange.

Skip the agent and broker line (855-788-6275) that also turns up in searches. It is built for licensed agents who enter a National Producer Number, not for consumers.

Numbers for state-run exchanges

Some states run their own marketplace, and you must call that exchange, not HealthCare.gov. The table lists the numbers the IRS publishes, plus Virginia, whose exchange lists 888-687-1501. Hours vary by exchange. New York's line runs Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm, and Saturday, 9am to 1pm. Confirm the hours and any recent number change on your exchange's own website.

Your state may not be listed, or it may have moved to its own exchange recently. In that case, choose your state on HealthCare.gov, which points you to the right place.

Most states share one federal number, but a state-run exchange only answers its own callers.

Step 1. Gather what you need before you dial

Have your Application ID and household details in front of you before you call. Representatives can only work with information you can give them, and a call that starts with a hunt for paperwork wastes your hold time.

Find your Application ID

If you applied online, your Application ID is in your account. If you applied by phone or on paper, you get an eligibility notice and Application ID by mail, in your HealthCare.gov account, or by phone.

Applied by phone or paper and nothing has arrived? Call and ask whether your eligibility results are ready. If they are, the representative can give you the Application ID so you can continue.

Collect your household details

Keep these items within reach:

  • Names and birth dates of everyone applying

  • Social Security numbers, or immigration document numbers where they apply

  • Your estimated household income for the coverage year

  • Employer and income information for each earner

  • Details of any current coverage

  • Any notice or letter the Marketplace sent you

Write your goal in one sentence too, such as "I need to correct my income" or "I need to pick a plan." That sentence keeps the call short.

A call that starts with your Application ID in hand usually ends with a finished task.

Step 2. Call at the right time and prepare for the wait

Call the health insurance marketplace contact number during open hours, and expect longer waits near enrollment deadlines. The federal line never closes except on holidays, but state exchanges keep set hours, so match your call to them.

Pick your time

For HealthCare.gov, early mornings and mid-week often run quieter than deadline weeks, though wait times vary. For a state exchange, check the hours first. A New York caller who dials on Sunday reaches no one.

Put the call on speaker, keep your documents next to you, and charge your phone. Do not send documents or questions by email, because HealthCare.gov does not accept them that way.

Use the TTY and relay lines

If you are deaf, hard of hearing or speech disabled, use the TTY line for your marketplace rather than the voice number. Some examples:

  • HealthCare.gov: 1-855-889-4325

  • NY State of Health: 800-662-1220

  • Virginia: 711

Dial from the official site's own listing, and the number you call is the number you can trust.

Step 3. Tell the representative what you need

State your task in the first thirty seconds and ask for the specific result you want. Representatives handle many request types, and a clear opening sends you to the right place fast.

What the call center can do

On the HealthCare.gov line, a representative can:

  • Submit an application by phone

  • Check whether your eligibility results are ready and give you your Application ID

  • Describe available plans and help you compare them by price and features

  • Finish your enrollment by phone

Special enrollment follows the same process. If you recently lost coverage, got married or had a baby, you typically have 60 days from the event to enroll, so call soon after the change.

A script you can copy

Read this at the start of the call and fill in the blanks:

Hi, I'm calling about my Marketplace application. My Application ID is ____. I applied by [phone / paper / online] on ____. I need to [check my eligibility results / compare plans / correct my income / report a change]. Before we hang up, can I get a reference number for this call?

Write down the representative's name, the date and the reference number. If you have to call back, that record saves you from starting over.

Name your task in the first sentence, and the representative can skip the guesswork.

Step 4. Confirm the result and know when to get help

Your coverage is not active until you pay the first premium, so treat the call as finished only after that payment. Then handle the follow-up items below.

Pay your premium and watch for Medicaid referrals

After you enroll online or by phone, pay your first month's premium to your insurance company, not the Marketplace. Contact the insurer for payment details. Skipping this payment means your coverage does not take effect.

If you or a family member qualifies for Medicaid or CHIP, the Marketplace sends your information to your state agency, and a representative contacts you to enroll.

Report changes and keep your tax records

Tell the Marketplace when your household income or family size changes, because changes can affect your advance premium tax credit. At tax time, you will receive Form 1095-A, which helps you complete your return. If you took advance credit payments, you must file a return with Form 8962 to reconcile them. Skipping that can cost you advance payments the following year.

When a broker saves you the hold time

A long wait or a confusing set of plans is a good moment to bring in a broker. Golden Health and Life Agency offers ACA Marketplace assistance and a one-hour Health Consultation to go through your options with you, so you are not working through plan details alone on hold.

Finish the call by paying your first premium, because unpaid coverage never starts.

Make the call with a plan

Use the right number for your state: 1-800-318-2596 for HealthCare.gov, or your state exchange's line from the table. Gather your Application ID and household details, call during open hours, state your task in your first sentence, and write down a reference number. Then pay your first premium, report any changes, and keep your tax form.

If you would rather not spend your afternoon on hold, or you want to compare plans through an agency with a network of over 300 carriers, contact Golden Health and Life Agency and tell us what you need.
